The Remains of the Day Dignity Essay Example For Students
The Remains of the Day Dignity Essay The novel contains a recurring theme of dignity. This theme is stated and restated throughout the novel. Define dignity and then consider the authors intention and conclude with your own explanation of the quality of dignity. Portfolio Essay: The Remains of the DayDignity, according to the Oxford Dictionary, is ââ¬Å"a composed and serious manner/style, the state of being worthy of honour or respectâ⬠. In the novel, dignity is exoterically found in the form of proper gentlemen, as well as butlers who allow nothing to distract or faze them from doing their duty. What about the everyday definition in the modern world. This dignity today is rarely encountered other than in the higher levels of old fashioned society, politics and perhaps serious business matters. With all our upbringing, culture and modernisation, few have retained what was known as the dignity of even a half century ago. No one has the time any more to nurture and develop their dignity to a reasonable potential, as they find increasingly less and less reason to do so, relying instead on pure wit, instinct and professional tact. We will write a custom essay on The Remains of the Day Dignity specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now What I think is meant when one talks about dignity is the following. Take an imaginary case. You are confronted with a difficult or abnormal situation, yet you can maintain the same level of thinking and can attempt to deal with the situation. Or, you are forced to respond to a matter, and there is the possibility of your letting it get out of hand, but you control yourself and respond instead while focused and maintaining a civilised manner. That is dignity. As is evident throughout the novel, it is a quality inherent in all people. The authors intention and a below the surface view become clear: during his car journey. Mr Stevens becomes acutely aware of the dignity present in the people he meets, for example the family who takes him in when he runs out of gas. These are hardly the upper crust folk, yet their demeanour warms him and places them all on an even level. From there, communication tends to become easier. Thanks to the dignity in these people, Mr Stevens has little trouble adapting to his situation and manages to make the most out of it. Herein, I believe, lies the authors intention with regard to dignity. He is saying we should look further that where we perceive dignity to lie; we should look closer, at the common folk; we should look closer yet, find it within ourselves. He adds that dignity is a precious value in life and, even from a butlers perspective, can enable us to achieve that ââ¬Å"greatnessâ⬠we are after. Yet another point the author is trying to put across is the fact that without proper dignity, one may find oneself in daunting situations that one could otherwise had avoided. The American senator who was present at the major discussions at Darlington Hall prior to the peace negotiations is a perfect example. He stated that all present were dreamers and amateurs, incapable of handling the future of the nation which ââ¬Å"should be left to professionalsâ⬠. Lord Darlington replied that what was seen as amateurism was, in fact, dignity. This encounter points out that, lacking dignity, you mis judge others and misunderstand their actions and ambitions. There is no doubt that dignity is a fine quality for anyone to possess. Quite apart from the aforementioned, there are several further aspects which dignity carries. One is honour. Dignity goes hand in hand with this other quality, they are related and used in conjunction. Possessing dignity enables one to place honour in ones actions and words, both of which have large effects on the individual. Another is respect. Standing on ones dignity commands respect from his/her peers. Respect is highly valued no matter where one is, and being able to command it almost at will is a very valuable skill. With respect in hand, one can venture to higher levels of success, because those around you are less likely to interfere, more likely to assist and will not question: respect carries trust. .uc808bfd795b429d867d250f693720440 , .uc808bfd795b429d867d250f693720440 .postImageUrl , .uc808bfd795b429d867d250f693720440 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uc808bfd795b429d867d250f693720440 , .uc808bfd795b429d867d250f693720440:hover , .uc808bfd795b429d867d250f693720440:visited , .uc808bfd795b429d867d250f693720440:active { border:0!important; } .uc808bfd795b429d867d250f693720440 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uc808bfd795b429d867d250f693720440 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uc808bfd795b429d867d250f693720440:active , .uc808bfd795b429d867d250f693720440:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uc808bfd795b429d867d250f693720440 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uc808bfd795b429d867d250f693720440 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uc808bfd795b429d867d250f693720440 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uc808bfd795b429d867d250f693720440 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uc808bfd795b429d867d250f693720440:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uc808bfd795b429d867d250f693720440 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uc808bfd795b429d867d250f693720440 .uc808bfd795b429d867d250f693720440-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uc808bfd795b429d867d250f693720440:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Othello Essay ThesisFinally, dignity itself, on account of its rarity, has become a worthy quality within itself. Those who can claim proper dignity have much to be proud of and are seen as great gentlemen of modern times. In conclusion, the recurring theme of dignity presented in the novel presents an excellent example of this fine quality. It combines inherited and assumed dignity with developed dignity, along with both their uses and implications thereof.

Archetypes in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Essay Essay Example
Archetypes in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Essay Essay Example Archetypes in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Essay Paper Archetypes in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Essay Paper Essay Topic: The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn In the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Mark Twain utilizes the originals of the Unwilling Hero. the Shape Shifter. and Haven vs. Wilderness to demo that Huck Finn and Jim can happen freedom wholly along the Bankss of the Mississippi River. Huck portrays the unwilling hero because he puts a batch of idea into something before he does it. even though it will profit everybody. He is besides really hesitating to execute epic Acts of the Apostless. The King and Duke show the original of the form shifter because they are invariably lying about their individualities and lead oning everybody. The Mississippi represents the characters ââ¬Å"havenâ⬠. and Huck and Jimââ¬â¢s place represents the ââ¬Å"wildernessâ⬠. Huckleberry Finn portrays the original of the unwilling hero. Huck is really loath to make the right thing. and ever experience guilty about everything he does. The challenges Huck had to get the better of about caused Huck and Jim to free their opportunity at happening freedom. but he ever built up his bravery and was pushed to contend for what he thought was right. After Tom and Huck spooked Jim. Tom wanted to take it farther and ââ¬Å"tie Jim to a tree for funâ⬠( page 5 ) . Huck had felt guilty for frightening Jim and didnââ¬â¢t want to make any longer injury. so Huck said ââ¬Å"no ; he might wake and do a disturbanceâ⬠( page 5 ) . This relates to him being an unwilling hero because you can see that Huck felt bad for making the incorrect thing and his scruples pushed him to make the right thing the 2nd clip about. Another clip when Huck did something to acquire Jim and himself farther down the river was when he said ââ¬Å"I wonââ¬â¢t Lashkar-e-Taiba no runaway niggas get by me if I can assist it. â⬠( page 91 ) . Huck so went on seeking to convert himself that what he did was right. ââ¬Å"They went off and I got aboard the raft. experiencing bad and low ; because I knowed really good I had done incorrect. and I see if warn ; t no usage for me to seek to larn to make rightâ⬠¦then I thought a minute. and says to myself. keep on ; sââ¬â¢pose youââ¬â¢d ââ¬Ëaââ¬â¢ done right and giver Jim up. would you felt better than what you do now? No says I. Iââ¬â¢d experience bad-Iââ¬â¢d feel merely the same manner I do now. Well. so. says I. whatââ¬â¢s the usage you ainââ¬â¢t no problem to make incorrect. â⬠( page 91 ) . Huck felt guilty for lying approximately holding Jim aboard with him. he knew that what he was making was illegal and had problem seeing the good in what he did. As the reader. you know that Jim is really a good adult male and doesnââ¬â¢t deserve to be treated as a slave. But for Huck. it was a truly difficult battle for him to convert himself that lying about Jim and making the immoral thing was really moving as the hero. Even Huck didnââ¬â¢t think of himself as a hero after he did this. he felt bad about what he did. but the fact that it took a batch to carry him to experience comfy about his determination shows that he is suited for the unwilling hero. In the quotation mark ââ¬Å"I says to myself. this is another 1 that Iââ¬â¢m allowing his rob her of her money. And when she got through they all jest laid theirselves out to do me experience at place and know I was amongst friends. I felt so cantankerous and low down and intend that I says to myself. my mindââ¬â¢s made up ; Iââ¬â¢ll hive that money for them or break. â⬠( page 175 ) . Huck had merely allowed con creative person to steal money from many different people and had felt guilty about it because he knew of them being form shifters all along. When the con creative persons made their effort to steal these three guiltless misss heritage. Huck felt so bad that he decided to intrigue against them and steal their money back. It took a batch of bravery for Huck to make this. The reader and Huck portion the cognition of cognizing the King and Dukes existent individuality as con creative persons. But with Huck being inside the state of affairs. opposed to the reader being able to see the clear determination. Huck did non desire people to cognize that he had done this title. This shows that he was still hesitating on desiring to make this heroic act. This is showed when Huck says ââ¬Å"I got to make it in a manner that they wonââ¬â¢t intuition that I done itâ⬠( page 175 ) . Once once more it takes a batch of Huck converting himself to make this heroic act and is still diffident about it after he does this. This clearly shows Huck in the original of the unwilling hero. Having Huck measure out of his comfort zone lead himself and Jim to freedom. but Huck would non hold been able to demo every bit much bravery if it werenââ¬â¢t for the original of the shapeshifter portrayed by the King and Duke. The Duke and King are ever lying about their individuality and altering their narrative. they deceive many people including Jim. endangering Huck and Jimââ¬â¢s opportunity at freedom. The Duke and King began their function as form shifters when they were foremost introduced in the novel. Huck and Jim were fooled by them for a spot. but it didnââ¬â¢t take long for Huck to calculate out that these were con creative persons. Having two form shifters aboard with them besides got Huck to research his function as the unwilling hero more. You can see this by the manner he doesnââ¬â¢t want to state he knows who they truly are. ââ¬Å"It didnââ¬â¢t take me long to do up my head that these prevaricators warnââ¬â¢t no Kings nor Dukes at all. but merely low down baloneies and frauds. But I neer said nil. neer allow on ; kept it to myself ; itââ¬â¢s the best manner ; so you donââ¬â¢t have no wrangles. and donââ¬â¢t get into no problem. â⬠( page 125 ) . The King and Duke scammed a whole town out of $ 87. 75 by doing up a make narrative merely to do some speedy money. ââ¬Å"He told them he was a pirate-been a plagiarist for 30 yearsâ⬠¦heââ¬â¢d been robbed last dark and put ashore off of a steamboat without a centâ⬠¦and put in the remainder of his life seeking to turn the plagiarists into the true pathâ⬠( page 131 ) Because the town people thought that their narrative was so bosom touching they decided to give them a batch of money even though they didnââ¬â¢t need it at all. This shows how pitiless these characters really are even thought they come across as sort people. The King and Dukes concluding illustration of being form shifters was when they sold Jim back as a slave. By making this Huck and Jim eventually recognize how barbarous and rotten these people are. They wholly betrayed the people who had helped these con artists escape down the river buy selling Jim back into bondage for a really little monetary value. This shows their true character and makes Huck so angry. that he eventually decides to step up and go Jimââ¬â¢s hero. It was really common for the Duke and King to make this. but it took a batch of bravery for Huck to eventually make up ones mind to deliver Jim. This was Huckââ¬â¢s major act that can be seen as the unwilling hero and the concluding measure into procuring Jimââ¬â¢s freedom. All of that can be seen when Huck says ââ¬Å"After all we had done for those villains. here it was all come to nil. everything was all busted up and ruined. because they could hold the bosom to break up Jim suck a fast one as that. and do him a slave once more all his life. and amongst aliens. excessively. for 40 dirty dollarsâ⬠( page 211 ) . Even though the King and Duke where really deceiving form shifters. they help Huck recognize that the Mississippi River was where he could happen his freedom and that the river was his ââ¬Å"havenâ⬠. Haven vs. Wilderness is another original that is outstanding in the novel. Huck and Jim spend about all of the narrative out on the Mississippi River. but merely because it is in the Wilderness doesnââ¬â¢t mean that that is their ââ¬Å"Wildernessâ⬠. The narrative starts off with Huck explicating that he has a bad place life. His male parent is ever intoxicated and doesnââ¬â¢t return attention of him. so he lives with the widow. The widow is in full control of Huck and he hates it. He is the sort of individual who loves to hold freedom and is ever endeavoring for it. That is the same for Jim. he is a slave that about gets sold for money. but all he wants is freedom. Both Huck and Jimââ¬â¢s place lives are non what either of them are looking for. This shows that this portion of their lives is really the Wilderness because to them they are unhappy and non comfy. This is showed when Huck says ââ¬Å"Pretty shortly I wanted to smoke. and asked the widow to allow me. but she wouldnââ¬â¢t. â⬠( page 2 ) . Huck and Jim end up running off and passing their lives out on the Mississippi River. trusting that finally they will traverse the boundary line and Huck will hold the freedom he wanted and Jim will no longer be a slave. Throughout the narrative the reader starts to recognize that the Mississippi River represents freedom and Huck and Jim have really found their haven out on the river with each other. Both of them achieve the freedom they want and have a good clip researching and run intoing new people ( and smoking baccy ) . This life is exciting and thrilling for them and is really what they aspired from the beginning. This is why the Mississippi River is their Haven. You know when Huck gets off when you read ââ¬Å"I fooled pablum and got awayâ⬠( page 30 ) . You can besides see how Jim was treated when he says ââ¬Å"I hear old missis Tell de wider she gwyne to sell me down to Orleans. but she didnââ¬â¢t want to. but she could git eight hundââ¬â¢d dollars for me. en it ââ¬Ëuz sich a large stack oââ¬â¢ money she couldnââ¬â¢ resisââ¬â¢ . â⬠( page 43 ) . By the terminal of the book Huck is stating that he is traveling to hold to remain with his Aunt because his male parent died and his Aunt couldnââ¬â¢t merely allow him travel. When Huck says ââ¬Å"Aunt Sally sheââ¬â¢s traveling to follow me and educate me. and I canââ¬â¢t stand it. I been there earlier. â⬠( page 293 ) . Huck is upset about being adopted because you can see that he loved being on the raft with all of the exhilaration and freedom. Huck is put back into the ââ¬Å"Wildernessâ⬠and eventually realizes that what he wants ( what his oasis is ) . is to be out researching the universe with his brothers Tom and Jim. Even though this is opposite from what you would anticipate a oasis and a wilderness to be it is what made Huck happy and kept the fresh interesting. These topographic points are where Huck eventually realized that for the first clip in his life he had the freedom that he had ever wanted. Through all the illustration you can see how Mark Twain used the originals of the Unwilling Hero. the Shape Shifter. and Haven vs. Wilderness to show a battle to freedom in the book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Huck Finn is the Unwilling hero because it takes a batch of carrying for him to make the right thing. but in the terminal he ever does. The King and Duke display the Shape Shifter original because of how deceiving and two faced they are around everybody. Finally the Mississippi River represents the characters ââ¬Å"Havenâ⬠and Huck and Jimââ¬â¢s place represent ââ¬Å"Wildernessâ⬠because of how unhappy they are at place opposed to the river where they are both happy. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a really inspirational narrative of Huck executing altruistic heroic Acts of the Apostless and will go forth you experiencing good and hopeful for the characters in their hereafter.

3 More Sentences with Dangling Modifiers
3 More Sentences with Dangling Modifiers 3 More Sentences with Dangling Modifiers 3 More Sentences with Dangling Modifiers By Mark Nichol When writers attach a phrase to the beginning of a sentence to provide additional information, they must take care that the subject of the sentence actually refers to the action or the thing described in that introductory text. Here are some sentences that illustrate the necessity of this vigilance. 1. ââ¬Å"Originally scheduled for retirement (and certain death) in 2003, the hapless racehorseââ¬â¢s trainer now says that after Glorious Springââ¬â¢s last race, the horse will be allowed to retire to a comfy pasture on a farm near her birthplace.â⬠This sentence implies that the hapless racehorseââ¬â¢s trainer was originally scheduled for retirement and death ââ¬â perhaps by execution, because of culpability for the horseââ¬â¢s losing streak? However, it is the horse, not the trainer, whose retirement (and subsequent visit to the slaughterhouse) was averted. The subject of the sentence must be unambiguous: ââ¬Å"The racehorse was originally scheduled for retirement in 2003, but her trainer now says that after Glorious Springââ¬â¢s last race, the horse will be allowed to retire to a comfy pasture on a farm near Glorious Springââ¬â¢s birthplace.â⬠(The horse is named again in this revision because the trainerââ¬â¢s gender is not clear thanks to his ambiguous Japanese name, which is not shown in this excerpt and ââ¬Å"her birthplaceâ⬠might be misconstrued as the trainerââ¬â¢s.) 2. ââ¬Å"Raised in a Lutheran family, two of Paulââ¬â¢s brothers became ministers, and he chose to ââ¬Ëminister through medicine.ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ Two of Paulââ¬â¢s brothers were raised in a Lutheran family, but so were Paul and another brother, and the sentence implies that Lutherans raised only those who became ministers (and, perhaps that those two brothers were raised in another household); the influence of that upbringing on him is obscured. The sentence should be revised to explicitly place the emphasis on Paul (and Iââ¬â¢ve clarified the source of the partial quote): ââ¬Å"Paul and his brothers were raised in a Lutheran family, and two of them became ministers, while he chose, as he put it, to ââ¬Ëminister through medicine.ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ 3. ââ¬Å"Normally a four-day voyage, the crew only brought four daysââ¬â¢ worth of rations, not anticipating a strong headwind to slow the schooner.â⬠This sentence names the crew as a four-day voyage. To eliminate this unfortunate association, describe the voyageââ¬â¢s customary duration with a simple declarative syntax, then attach the rest of the information: ââ¬Å"The voyage normally took four days, and the crew, not anticipating a strong headwind that slowed the schooner, brought only four daysââ¬â¢ worth of rations.â⬠(Note, too, how the revision moves and parenthesizes the incidental information about the obstructive headwind.) Innovation and Entrepreneurship - Essay Example However, there are individuals who come up with original ideas for the future to gain huge profits. As a rule, these types of business look very interesting. How do you react when you are told that another millionaire made his millions on the sale of conventional jackets autographed by celebrities? But in fact this is the way Tanneberg Walter raised his capital in German city of Kiel. Selling jackets with autographs impressed rich people and they paid huge sums of money for these jackets. However, the business plan should be developed with regards to the investor's needs. The following steps should be taken: Summary. Every business plan summarizes data it contains. After reading the summary of the investor can "wake up" and invest money. Product. This section includes information about the product (product, service, project, and company): description, data ââ¬â and a "unique selling proposition" (USP). It is very important to show confidence in the success of the project (Mintzbe rg, Ahlstrand and Lampel,1998). Market analysis. This part of a business plan includes information on the amount of the target market, its main trends. Such issues as market share and the actions taken are considered and a part of expenses is devoted to advertising and promotion. Manufacturing process. A description of all production phases of the project, a list of resources and tools (equipment, premises etc). Staff. The list of professionals involved in the design / development / promotion project (their skills, experience, qualifications etc). Project management. The list of project managers and the distribution of responsibilities between them. Cost management personnel, including the costs of the office (salaries, bonuses, rent, equipment, furniture, supplies etc). Sales plan. Projected revenues in the first months after launch, and after a year, three or five are considered. Examples of different scenarios for the project should be included in this section. Investment. The am ount of funds required to implement the project. You need to specify how much will cost borrowings, in which periods of activity and to what extent they are needed. Of course, there are many other issues, which should be taken into account, but, to my mind, the central innovative and a unique idea is a guarantee of further business plan success. My unique idea looks like this: I want to help my city in cleaning the roads from the used chewing gums. I plan to develop a series of posters with portraits of various celebrities - from politics to pop business starts. These posters can be placed on the subway while moving escalator, at the exit of the subway and bus stops and lamp posts and every 100 meters. The idea came to my mind after I noticed that people stick gum used for posters with images of people. Therefore, I plan to develop posters with the faces of famous people and write questions on them, such as "How do you feel about the legalization of marijuana in England?", "How do y ou feel about legalizing euthanasia?", "How do you feel about the banning of abortion?" And so on. Of course, people would like to vote in such an interesting way. Then personnel of my team will collect gums from two sectors of each poster: "for" and "against." Therefore, our community will get clean roads without any expenses on cleaning techniques, find out nation's attitude to critical social issues and enable me and my company to promote famous people and produce posters with their names. Management accounting Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Management accounting - Essay Example Some managers and staff workers in the organisation are being evaluated using the income statement, balance sheet and the statement of cash flows as benchmarks. Some managers use the balance sheet to determine if all the customers have already paid their dues on timeSome managers would stop sending goods on account to customers who have large over due receivables In addition, some companies use different tools or criteria to determine if the managers have been doing profitably or beautifully. The following paragraphs will explain in detail this introductory.First, the management team has a problem with its working capital. working capital is arrived at by subtracting total current assets from total current liabilities. The total current assets include cash on hand, cash in bank and petty cash funds. The current assets also includes accounts receivable as well as notes receivable. The current assets also includes inventory end generated from current year purchases and beginning of the y ear inventory count. One problem in this situation is that the management team has a lot of write -offs. This simply means that the company has not been able to collect the receivables from the clients for one reason or another. Write offs are done only if the possibility of collecting the receivables is impossible because of the customers' bankruptcy, transfer to another location so that collection of the account owed by the customer cannot be pursued. The write offs result to a reduction in the accounts receivable. a reduction in the accounts receivable results to a reduction in the current ratio. A reduction in the current ratio indicates that the company is not doing well in terms of the balance sheet presentation for the current year. Likewise, the collection of only fifty percent of the amount collectible shows that the management team has lost fifty percent of its receivables amount. There are two ways to treat this lack of payment by the customer. One way is to record the fifty percent payment as a debit to cash and a credit to accounts receivable. The management then retains the remaining fifty percent uncollected accounts receivable from the disgruntled employee in the current assets section of the balance sheet. This would not result to an increase or decrease in the current assets portion of the balance sheet for the year (Fazzari 1993, 328). This would be a good accounting procedure to follow because it is what is the normal process as stated in the international accounting standards. On the other hand, a conservative approach to this situation would be to record the fifty percent payment from the unsatisfied customers as full payment of the original amount contracted. This would give us a reduction in the accounts receivable. Consequently, this would result to a decrease in the working capital of the management team. This will not give a good impression of the management team. The head of the management team was completely surprised when he or she received the fifty -percent payment. The surprise was due to the management team leader's expectation that the management team would receive the entire one hundred percent of the job done. The management team leader had to console himself or herself that the lack of payment was because the customer was dissatisfied with their job. The customer explained that the management team was not paid the entire management consultancy fee because the management team did not reach its pre -agreed targets. The profit center manager who is also the head of the management team feels that his department should not be dependent another department to save it from financial distress. The profit center manager is tasks to produce his or her department's income statement and balance sheet. Here, the profit center (may also be called a department must not ask for dole -outs or free rides from the other departments within the

Stem Cells: What How and Why? Essay -- essays research papers
Stem Cells: What, How and Why? Stem cells are infinitely valuable when considering their potential applications in the medical profession. While current legislative restrictions have halted the development of new ?stem cell lines? to any agency or company that receives any form of governmental grants, there is no question that the medical profession is standing at the brink of a new era of technological advancements in healthcare and research. Stem cells are valuable due to the fact that they are ?non-designated,? (have no specifically assigned task in the body, i.e. liver cells, brain cells, skin cells, etc.) and they also have the ability to divide indefinitely. Thus, theoretically stem cells could replace any damaged or lost specifically designated cells within the body. However, this is just a brief mention of the potential applications of stem cell research, which will be discussed at a later point in this essay. Stem cells are categorized into three genres based upon their potential developmental capability, total to limited. (NIH PRIMER http://www.nih.gov/news/stemcell/primer.htm) Totipotent stem cells are stem cells whose potential is total, thus totipotent. Totipotent stem cells are derived from embryonic tissue and fertilized ovarian eggs. This type of stem cell is of particular importance to researchers due to its ability to ?specialize into extraembryonic membranes and tissues, the embryo, and all postembryonic tissues and organs? (NIH Primer). However these type of cells are extremely difficult to come by and only occur in certain places at certain developmental times. Pluripotent stem cells are stem cells in which their potential is large but not total as in Totipotent stem cells. These cells lead to the development of many cells, but cannot derive certain types of fetal cells necessary for the development of a fetus as do Totipotent stem cells. These cells undergo further assigment into cells that are designed to derive specifically assigned cells. Pluripotent stem cells are somewhat easier to come by comparatively speaking to totipotent stem cells. The final genre of stem cells is that of multipotent stem cells. These cells are more specialized than the other two categories and thus are more restricted in their capability. Multipotent stem cells are derived from pluripotent stem cells. While pluripotent stem cells are least in their po... ...if a republican president is elected following Bush. Some might say these restrictions are necessary as technology and knowledge expand. However, by allowing the government to limit was scientist can and can?t do; we?re only doing one thing. Making the most brilliant minds our country has to offer leave. It seems as though America is one of the last overly conservative strongholds left in the modern world. If we allow our government to restrict what scientist can research in the United States, the scientist will simply move somewhere where the research isn?t illegal. I regard science as a passion. I can say with absolute certainty it is not my passion, however to many who make it their career choice, it is. I offer you this example. My passion is writing, if the government made it illegal to write about what I desired, I would do whatever necessary to allow myself to follow my passion. Moving across that big pond we call the Pacific Ocean would be a small price to pay to follow my passion and practice it freely. It should be noted that by restricting research of nearly any kind (yes I do have some morals) would simply result in the loss of America?s greatest thinkers.

Charles Lamb ââ¬ÅThoughtless Crueltyââ¬Â Essay
Most people, at some point of their lives, have tortured inferior insects whether it be pulling the wings off a fly or crushing an ant. In the poem ââ¬Å"Thoughtless Crueltyâ⬠by Charles Lamb the reader can see that the author is indeed angry about such a thing. The author uses the poetic devices such as diction, rhyme, and detail to describe his attitude toward those who perform such ââ¬Å"Thoughtless Crueltyâ⬠. The author first directs his attention to ââ¬Å"Robertâ⬠that has ââ¬Å"killââ¬â¢d that flyâ⬠. The author then says the man was ââ¬Å"devoid Of thought and senseâ⬠to have killed the fly. Here, the author is implying that ââ¬Å"Robertâ⬠must have been stupid for killing the innocent creature. The author goes on talking about natural death as a bird ââ¬Å"devoursâ⬠it or a ââ¬Å"cold blast in the nightâ⬠will take its life. By describing the natural causes of the insectââ¬â¢s death, Lamb sympathizes for the creature because of its unnatural death. Lamb continues discussing that pain exists in even ââ¬Å"The greatest beingâ⬠, and even the ââ¬Å"smallest ones possessâ⬠the feeling of death and pain experienced before. The author goes on with more detail in the piece about the crude humor in the creatureââ¬â¢s horrible death. Lamb explains, ââ¬Å"The life youââ¬â¢ve taken to supply, You could not do itâ⬠that the life ââ¬Å"Robertâ⬠has taken cannot be restored, no matter how hard he tries. The author tries to make ââ¬Å"Robertâ⬠feel guilty by enlightening him, ââ¬Å"A thing which no way you annoyââ¬â¢d ââ¬â Youââ¬â¢ll one day rue itâ⬠, suggesting that one day he will realize his cruelty and morn the death of the fly. ââ¬Å"The bird but seeks his proper foodâ⬠¦ May just take [its life]â⬠. Here Lamb goes into more detail about the natural death the fly may have experienced. ââ¬Å"A life by Nature made so short, Less reason is that you for sport Should shorter make it.â⬠Lamb again tries to weigh more guilt upon ââ¬Å"Robertâ⬠. ââ¬Å"Although their frame and structure less Escape our seeing,â⬠they still experience pain and its horrors. Though the rhyme scheme of AAAB, Charles Lamb starts to use the poetic device of rhyme to also express his attitude. In the first stanza, he talks about how ââ¬Å"Robert, killed that ââ¬Å"flyâ⬠, but not matter how hard he may ââ¬Å"tryâ⬠to ââ¬Å"supplyâ⬠the life he has taken, he could never ââ¬Å"do itâ⬠. In the secondà stanza Lamb writes that ââ¬Å"Robertâ⬠must have been ââ¬Å"devoidâ⬠of thinking to have ââ¬Å"destroyââ¬â¢dâ⬠the fly that he never ââ¬Å"annoyââ¬â¢dâ⬠, and will one day ââ¬Å"rue itâ⬠, expressing negativity by sympathizing for the innocent creature. The author then goes into the natural death by illustrating the bird seeking its ââ¬Å"foodâ⬠, that fate whose power ââ¬Å"enduââ¬â¢dâ⬠the fly thinks the time is ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠will take ââ¬Å"itâ⬠. Finally, the author fully expresses himself when he explains the pain ââ¬Å"The greatest beingâ⬠can have with its ââ¬Å"flesh â⬠that even the fly may ââ¬Å"possessâ⬠, small and structure ââ¬Å"lessâ⬠may escape our ââ¬Å"seeingâ⬠. All in all, the author uses many poetic devices such as diction, detail, and rhyme to express his attitude toward, what seems tragic to the author, event. Even the title ââ¬Å"Thoughtless Crueltyâ⬠expresses the authors feelings. Things may be different now, when you see a fly, pulling the wings off a fly may not seem the same.
